The Haitian government extended the state of emergency in several areas of the country for another month on Monday, with the aim of “facilitating the restoration of public order, social peace and security” in the face of the violence that is being experienced in the country.

This measure, as reported in an official note, will apply to the departments of Artibonite (centre), Nippes (south), Centre, West, where the capital is Port-au-Prince, and the northern districts of Plaisance and Limbé.
The communication indicates that, if necessary, curfews may be imposed in departments and districts under a state of emergency.
It is recalled that, in a state of emergency, certain exceptional measures may be taken such as the closure of establishments if their protection is not possible, the evacuation of persons or the suspension of transport or telephone services, among others.
In addition, the Government may requisition additional relief facilities and shelters for private persons if the logistical means available to public services are insufficient.
The extension of the state of emergency occurs amid high levels of violence.
